Rules & Regulations

So You Think You Can Make TV?The So You Think You Can Make TV? Digital Video Contest (the "Contest") is sponsored by Paperny Films Inc. ("Paperny Films").

The purpose of the Contest is to make a video in the form of a trailer for a lifestyle or factual series.

The Contest entry period starts on February 17, 2011 at 9:00am Pacific Time and closes on April 15, 2011 at 11:59pm Pacific Time (the "Entry Period").  The official entry form for the video must be submitted at http://www.papernyfilms.com/contest/enter within the Entry Period in order to qualify.

The Contest is open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada who are between the ages of nineteen and thirty inclusive as of April 15, 2011.

Only one entry may be submitted per person.  Teams are allowed to enter a collaborative video.

Entrants must be individuals (i.e. not a corporation).  Employees of Paperny Films and their immediate families are not eligible.

There is one cash prize of Three Thousand Canadian Dollars (C$3,000) (the "Cash Prize") which will be given to the winner of the Contest.  In the event that the winner of the Contest is a team, the Cash Prize will be split equally among the team members named on the official entry form. 

The winner will also qualify for a one month unpaid internship with Paperny Films (the "Internship"). The Internship may be completed remotely or in Paperny Films' Vancouver office, as determined by Paperny Films in its sole discretion. Paperny Films will not pay any moving, living or other associated expenses that may be incurred by the winner partaking in the Internship. In the event that the winner of the Contest is a team, only one person from the team will be able to accept the Internship. This person must be indicated on the official entry form.

The Cash Prize and the Internship must be accepted as awarded.  The Cash Prize and the Internship are non-transferable and cannot be shared except as stated above.  Paperny Films reserves the right to amend the Cash Prize and the Internship in its sole discretion without prior notice.

Paperny Films may at any time in its sole discretion disqualify any entrant.

Video must:

  • Be two minutes in length or less;
  • Focus on the purpose of the Contest stated above;
  • Not contain, depict or refer to any discriminatory, slanderous, libelous, offensive, or illegal content (all as determined by Paperny Films in its sole discretion);
  • Not contain any content that violates any law or any third party’s rights;
  • Be uploaded to YouTube with the phrase “Made for the Paperny Films So You Think You Can Make TV? Contest” in the video description with embedding and full-screen enabled; and
  • Be submitted through the official entry form at http://www.papernyfilms.com/contest/enter.

By submitting a video to this Contest, entrant warrants that:

  • Entrant is the original creator of the video;
  • Entrant is 19 years of age or older;
  • Entrant is the sole owner of the copyright for the video;
  • All materials in the video are original creations by entrant, or entrant has acquired all the necessary rights and releases;
  • Entrant has written releases from all individuals appearing in the video that allow entrant to copy, display, transmit, edit and otherwise use each individual’s image and/or likeness in the video and its promotion;
  • Entrant is able to prove that he/she owns all the necessary rights in the video; and
  • Entrant has honestly and completely filled out all of the fields in the official entry form.

The winner will be determined in the following way:

  • Videos will be viewed by a panel of judges consisting of Paperny Films' executives and special guest judges selected by Paperny Films.
  • The judges will select the finalists at their sole discretion.
  • Finalists will be contacted to confirm that they own all the necessary rights in their videos.
  • The finalist videos will be posted to http://www.papernyfilms.com/contest/enter on May 1, 2011.
  • The general public will vote on the finalist videos using a first-past-the-post system from May 1-15, 2011.  The finalist video with the most votes by the voting deadline of 11:59pm Pacific Time on May 15, 2011 will be declared the winner of the Contest.

This judging and voting process is subject to change without notice.

Paperny Films is not liable for any fraudulent voting.

Paperny Films shall require the finalists and/or winner to submit a signed declaration or release form. 

Entrants agree to have their name, image and hometown location published in connection with the Contest and agree to provide a high quality photo of themselves to Paperny Films if requested.

Finalists and/or winner may be required to send Paperny Films a digital file of the video with technical specifications determined by Paperny Films.

Entrant grants Paperny Films a non-exclusive, unrestricted, royalty-free license to exploit and distribute the video in all media now known or later discovered in perpetuity.  Entrant grants Paperny Films the right to edit or modify the video in any manner.

If the video is selected as a finalist, entrant grants Paperny Films the exclusive all media rights to create and exploit any number of productions, publications or other creative works (collectively the "Productions") based upon the video in perpetuity. Entrant shall be entitled to receive 10% of the net profits from all of the Productions, plus other financial consideration, to be negotiated in good faith, for work performed on any of the Productions. If there is no development activity on the Productions in the twelve month period following the official naming of the finalists, all rights shall revert to the entrant, except the non-exclusive right provided to Paperny Films to exploit and distribute the video in all territories in perpetuity. 

Paperny Films is not liable for any loss or damage resulting from entrant’s participation in the Contest.  Entrant agrees to indemnify and hold harmless Paperny Films and its employees, directors, officers, members, affiliates, agents, successors, assigns, licensees, judges and advertising and promotional agencies from any and all damages, injuries, claims, causes of actions or losses of any kind (including actual legal fees and expenses) arising from or related to entrant’s participation in the Contest.

Liability for any applicable taxes imposed by any government, if any, on any prize won is the sole responsibility of the winner.

These Rules & Regulations will be governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia, Canada.  Any disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with the Contest, the Cash Prize, the Internship or these Rules & Regulations will be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively by the appropriate court of the Province of British Columbia, Canada.
