Paperny and PBS to Fight Crime (Playback Magazine)

Paperny Films is taking the lead on a new project aimed at uncovering and bringing to trial unsolved civil rights murders in the American South, in collaboration with California's Center for Investigative Reporting and PBS.

The Civil Rights Cold Case Project will be comprised of a four-part documentary series, radio shows, feature articles, and a website with interactive and video components.

President David Paperny says the idea came from David Ridgen's 2007 investigative Mississippi Cold Case, a CBC doc about the 43-year-old murders of two black youths, that led to the arrest of a suspect.

Ridgen is coproducer alongside Paperny and Aynsley Vogel, who is director of factual development for the Vancouver company.

"There are hundreds of unsolved civil rights crimes that we think we can help bring to justice," Paperny tells Playback Daily. His prodco is well-known for socially conscious docs including The Broadcast Tapes of Dr. Peter (nominated for an Academy Award in 1994) and the more recent Confessions of an Innocent Man.

Cold Case, expected to take several years, has four veteran investigative reporters stationed in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana, where the project will have "story vans" to gather first-person witness accounts of crimes committed in the 1960s. Paperny expects to have a permanent production office set up in the South by spring. The project has also asked for the FBI to release documents of cold cases, to uncover other unsolved murders, he says.

"We're hoping to see some of these stories go to trial," adds Paperny.

The company will also collaborate with the National Security Archive in Washington and National Public Radio, in addition to some U.S. law and journalism schools.

The doc series will be broadcast on PBS, though Paperny may approach Canadian broadcasters for second-window rights.

Center for Investigative Reporting and Paperny Films Announce launch of the Civil Rights Cold Case Project

Investigations Will Reveal the Untold Stories Behind Several Unsolved, Racially-Motivated Murder Cases That Took Place in the South; Multimedia Project, Which Will Be Distributed on All Media Platforms, Seeks to Facilitate Reconciliation and Healing Through the Pursuit of Justice

Berkeley, CA and Vancouver, British Columbia – Today, the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR) and Paperny Films announced the launch of the Civil Rights Cold Case Project, a multimedia investigation of unsolved civil rights murders that took place in the South decades ago. The project is an unprecedented collaboration, bringing together the power of award-winning investigative reporting, narrative writing, documentary filmmaking and interactive multimedia production to reveal the long-neglected truth behind the murders and the untold stories of victims of racial injustice.

    Watch the Trailer here.

The Project’s reporters, including John Fleming, Ben Greenberg, Jerry Mitchell, Stanley Nelson, and Melvin Claxton, are well known for their investigative news reports, some of which prosecutors have used to build criminal cases against killers and conspirators who had walked free for more than 40 years. To date, every civil rights murder case that has been reopened and successfully prosecuted was the direct result of an investigation initiated by a journalist

“Investigative journalism has always played an important role in our democracy, and the Cold Case Project is no exception,” said Robert Rosenthal, executive director of the Center for Investigative Reporting. “These investigations will reopen unsolved murders that still cause pain to families and divide our communities. By seeking truth and justice, these investigative journalists and all of the partners involved will have real impact by moving our country closer to its goal of leaving racial conflict behind.”

The project is led by the Center for Investigative Reporting, Paperny Films and public television station WNET.org in New York, and also involves the National Security Archive, National Public Radio and leading law and journalism schools. Plans for the multimedia investigations, to be distributed in the coming years, include extensive print reporting, a television series, radio reports and rich new media to reach the broadest possible audience.

Support for the Cold Case Project to date has been provided by Atlantic Philanthropies, the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation, Open Society Institute, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Paperny Films releases “MURDER IN NORMANDY” and “FORCED MARCH TO FREEDOM” for Remembrance Day

In honour of Remembrance Day, Paperny Films is pleased to announce the DVD release of two poignant war documentaries—Murder in Normandy and Forced March to Freedom.

Murder in Normandy lays out the events of a little-known brutal war crime committed by the infamous SS Hitlerjugend (Hitler Youth) against Canadian prisoners of war during the Battle of Normandy. This is the story of how 145 young POWs were murdered in cold blood and why Canada's first ever war crimes trial did so little to redress those deaths. Using both documentary and dramatic techniques, the program examines exactly what type of heinous behaviour is condoned during the heat of battle and poses the larger and more universal question of whether or not guilt in the matter of war crimes is determined by the victor. Winner of the Silver Screen Award for History at the 2001 US International Film and Video Festival.
    (1999, 91 minutes)

Forced March to Freedom tells the story of ten thousand WWII POWs who anticipated liberation courtesy of the advancing Russian Red Army. These hopes were dashed when the Nazis forced the prisoners to march out of Stalag Luft III in the dead of winter toward the center of a collapsing Third Reich. This amazing test of endurance is shown through the eyes of Robert Buckham, a bomber pilot and artist who produced countless sketches and watercolors of prison camp life, as well as one of the only chronicles of the forced march itself. Interviews with Buckham and other POWs accentuate the sketches of camp life and the few actual photographs of the march known to exist.
    (2001, 70 minutes)

Murder in Normandy and Forced March to Freedom will each be available on DVD at the Paperny Films online store beginning November 11, 2009.

"The 100 Mile Challenge" sold to Planet Green

PAPERNY FILMS GIVES PASSION DISTRIBUTION THE HIT FOOD NETWORK SERIES THE 100 MILE CHALLENGE

London. June 4, 2009 – London-based Passion Distribution has concluded a distribution agreement with Vancouver-based Paperny Films for both completed programme and format rights to topical and trendy reality series produced for Food Network Canada, The 100 Mile Challenge. This is the first time the two companies have worked together. Passion proves it is up to the challenge by immediately selling the series to Discovery’s Planet Green in the United States.

Based on the best-selling book “The 100-Mile Diet,” the 6 x 60’ documentary series The 100 Mile Challenge taps into the global trend of eating locally which in turn cuts down on the carbon footprint our food intake demands and promotes local food production. The series challenges citizens of one town to survive only on food grown within 100 miles of their home for 100 days. Kitchen cupboards are stripped bare as the families remove everything that was not grown locally including sugar, spices, rice, flour – even olive oil and coffee. They then must start from scratch, researching and sourcing local product for their daily diet.

“We have wanted to work with Paperny Films for some time,” says Sally Miles, Passion Distribution, CEO who acquired the series. “Their programming is well produced with an exciting angle that gives it international appeal. When we met up at MIPTV and they told me about The 100 Mile Challenge it was a must for Passion Distribution to take to the international market. A real gem of an idea that I believe the market has been waiting for. A factual entertainment series involving food, lifestyle, family and an element of competition that will work in every territory. For the format sale into the UK we will cut down on the mile challenge, possibly 25 miles, as we are so much more built up than most parts of North America and this will probably be the same for other European countries.”

With sales also confirmed for France, Benelux and Asia, already the show is proving not such a challenge to sell.

The 100 Mile Challenge was a real labor of love for us, and to see Sally Miles and the talented folks at Passion expand the reach of this project so quickly is extremely gratifying”, says David Paperny, President, Paperny Films “ and Planet Green is the perfect home for this series in the US, so we see this sale as the start of two wonderful relationships.”

Passion Distribution offers a unique boutique and intimate style relationship with its content suppliers, both producers and broadcasters. The people and programming we represent are our passion. The company provides key market intelligence during the development process, funding and finance opportunities through gap funding, co-production and pre-sales and a world class sales team to deliver stellar results in international sales revenue.

Paperny Films Inc. – run by partners David Paperny, Audrey Mehler, and Cal Shumiatcher – is an independent, Vancouver-based production company that has garnered worldwide acclaim for its provocative, innovative, and entertaining television programming. From groundbreaking documentaries to reality television series to lifestyle programming, Paperny Films excels in capturing the essence of human stories.

Planet Green is the first 24-hour, multiplatform media destination devoted to the environment. This brand with a mission is available in 50 million homes and launched on June 4, 2008. Planet Green is the center for the new green conversation, speaking to people who want to understand green living and to those who truly want to make a difference in meeting the critical challenge of protecting our environment.

Planet Green and its two robust websites planetgreen.com and Treehugger.com, offer unique, original, insightful, inspiring, and entertaining content related to how humans impact the planet, and how we can evolve to live a better, brighter future. Planet Green’s unique programming, digital tools, and content will enlighten, empower and most certainly, entertain.

    Food Network Wants You!

Did you know that most of the foods that you eat have travelled at least 1500 miles to get to you?

When James MacKinnon and Alisa Smith realized this, they began the 100-Mile Diet. For a full year, James and Alisa ate foods grown and produced within a 100 mile radius of their Vancouver home. Their quest spawned a movement that attracted global media attention and grassroots interest, and led them to write the national best selling book 100-Mile Diet: A Year of Local Eating.

Paperny Films and Food Network Canada are now taking James and Alisa’s diet to the next level – by challenging the city of Mission: 100 miles, 100 days. We are looking for participants for our six-part series, shooting this summer.

Can you handle the 100 Mile Challenge?

IF YOU LIVE IN MISSION VISIT WWW.100MILECHALLENGE.TV to apply for this show!

Yet, in the midst of the madness, children have grown closer to their fathers and tough prairie men have been brought to their knees.
